The Melbreak Communities comprises the four parishes of Blindbothel, Buttermere, Lorton and Loweswater. It was established following the flooding of 2009 with a small amount of central government funding to focus on community resilience. Consultation with local people identified concerns and aspirations which became the broad themes of a Community Plan and guides our current activity, in particular:
- How we best help each other during extreme weather conditions
- The availability of a range of social activities in the Valley, catering for all age groups
- Looking after our surroundings for everyone’s benefit
The Melbreak Communities oversees an Emergency Plan to help people cope particularly with weather related emergencies. In addition, a large number of our local social, environmental and wildlife activities are run through or alongside the group. Often projects develop organically, people bring ideas to the group and we work to help those ideas grow.
The Melbreak Communities website has been developed to improve communication within the Valley. It provides information and minutes from the 4 Parish Councils in the area along with details of local services, groups and organizations. Information regarding the wide range of Melbreak Communities projects is available through the website.
